About the Pomodoro Technique
Origin
Developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s while he was a university student. He used a tomato-shaped kitchen timer to track his work — pomodoro is Italian for tomato. The technique was designed to combat procrastination and improve focus through short, structured bursts of effort.
Core Rules
Work on one task at a time — no multitasking. Set a timer for 25 minutes and work without interruption (this is one Pomodoro).
Take a 5-minute short break when the timer rings. After every 4 Pomodoros, take a longer break of 15–30 minutes. Any session interrupted or abandoned before the timer finishes is a void Pomodoro — it does not count.
Benefits
Manageable chunks — large tasks feel less overwhelming when broken into 25-minute pieces. Prevents burnout — regular breaks protect mental stamina throughout the day. Single-tasking — full attention on one task improves quality and depth of learning. Time awareness — tracking Pomodoros builds an accurate sense of how long tasks take. Steady rhythm — a predictable structure reduces decision fatigue and builds study habits.
Tips
Use a physical timer or dedicated app (e.g., Forest, Toggl, Focus Keeper) rather than a phone clock. Log distractions on paper when they arise — deal with them during the break, not mid-session. Use breaks actively: stand up, stretch, drink water, or look out a window; avoid screens. Adjust session lengths if needed — older or more experienced students may extend to 30–50 min Pomodoros. Stay consistent — the technique works best when practiced daily at the same times.
